Martin Spanyol’s work has gone through a number of transitions, from Abstract Expressionism to Figurative painting. He is primarily a painter but has also produced a large number of ceramics and drawings.
His approach has always been spontaneous, improvisational and visceral. Influences are mostly from Southern European artistic traditions – Velazquez, Zurbaran, Goya, Van Gogh, De Chirico, Matisse, Bonnard, Picasso, Dufy and Morandi.

Hotel Finix is the title of an ongoing body of small gouache paintings that depict remembered and imagined Mediterranean locations. The work explores the enigmatic moment of arrival in such places, nostalgia and the selectiveness of memory. It is also concerned with the nature of Painting itself and with how painterly gesture, pattern and abstract surfaces create illusion. These paintings are upbeat, celebratory and appeal to a shared experience of the anticipation and memory of travel – an imaginary grand tour.

When he took up Ceramics in 1990, it was to find a new form for the imagery that was central to his painting. This hybrid of Painting and Ceramics has produced something new and surprising. The work has been sought by collectors from the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Britain.
